American Cancer Society's Relay For Life

Source: WikipediaTonight, I am supposed to talk to my community's group of Relay For Life team captains to give them some fundraising ideas. I figured I would post that info here, too, in case you are raising money for ACS or any other favorite charity.

Good luck! If you want to brainstorm a fundraiser, email me. I love that stuff: stacy@stacyrocks.com. If you would like to donate, please visit http://main.acsevents.org/goto/stacyjax.

Prepare for Fundraising

Know your story: you need to be able to tell people why you Relay, and you need to be able to explain why their support is so important. A personal story connects a potential donor more than facts and figures alone. Maybe your story fits one of these examples (just examples – make your story personal to who you are and why you Relay – be sure to incorporate how your efforts impact our community/cancer research, etc.) . . .

I participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life because I am a cancer survivor who has been a recipient of the American Cancer Society’s services. When I was undergoing treatment, I took advantage of [service]. Without money raised via Relay For Life, I may not have had this opportunity.

My [relative] has been fighting cancer for X [months/years]. The American Cancer Society’s [Hope Lodge, ROCK Camp, etc.] provided necessary services to our family when we needed it most. Relay For Life is the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. Without the money raised during Relay, my family and other families like ours would never get the benefit of [service].

I lost my [relative/friend] to cancer. I would like to be part of the fight to find the cure. Relay For Life is an overnight event that brings our community together to help support the American Cancer Society and its lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. The Society works hard every day to prevent cancer and save lives by supporting groundbreaking research, affecting public policies that protect us from cancer, and educating people on how to prevent or detect cancer early. The Society helps people with cancer right here in our own community. And our efforts at Relay For Life can help the American Cancer Society keep working toward a cancer-free future. (most of this came right out of the email template you can access online]

Know Your Teammates & Limitations: Before diving into a group fundraiser, take a look at the make up of your team. Are your teammates all from the same company/church/school? Are you all from the same social/business circles? These things can help you pick the right group fundraisers. A Tupperware fundraiser may work great for a church team, for example, but won’t necessarily work if your team is made up of students. A candy fundraiser may not be allowed at your place of business. If you are a church team, you don’t want to just focus on tapping your congregation – churches depend on tithing. Find ways that your group can engage people outside of your common circle of friends and business associates.

Know Your Circle of Influence: Who do you and your teammates know? Maybe your best friend is in a band that would offer a gig for free. Find a nightclub that has a open spot and ask that they donate the money they would have paid the band. Does one of your teammates belong to a Country Club? See if the club can donate a space for a charity wine tasting. Are your teammates on MySpace, Facebook, etc.? Be sure to post links from your profiles to your online fundraising pages – and include your fundraising page link in your personal email signatures. You can also create business cards to hand out – put a short “why I relay” on the back with your name and Relay fundraising link on front.

Tupperware
Tupperware offers 40% to the Fundraising Organization. We have a new Fundraising Catalog coming out for March 1st. There are several ways to do a Tupperware Fundraiser.

#1 I could come in and give a demonstration of the products. Then pass out the catalogs.

#2 Round Robin - Several members of the group would invite their friends and family into their home (or place of their choice) and I would give a demonstration of the products. (This is the best option to raise more funds)
#3 Just pass out the catalogs and hope for the best (not the best way to do a Fundraiser).

For every $1000 you receive in orders your Organization would get $400! I can also purchase a Gift Card for the top sellers OR I could give an additional 5%.

GFS Marketplace Store
Three fundraising programs: custom-label bottled water, candy, a la carte http://www.gfs.com/content_marketplace/fundraising/fundraising.html

Custom Events (these might take more work, but they can be a lot of fun):

  • Trivia Night: get a restaurant, church, school, bar, etc. to host a Trivia Night party. You can charge admission or a nominal entry fee. Be sure to have prizes for winners and runners up. Many local merchants will be glad to donate prizes for charitable events.
  • Bake sales: you can recruit your church or company’s best bakers and have a bake sale. All proceeds can go to your Relay team’s fundraising efforts.
  • Relay Café: if you have a company Relay team, see if you can recruit management/executives to serve lunch to employees who want to make reservations at your Relay Café. You can either make lunch or have it catered. Be sure to charge enough to make a profit. Profit should go to the American Cancer Society.
  • Sell Relay Items: Visit www.rflstore.com to find cool Relay-themed items that you can sell at work, church, school, and on event night.
  • Host an Event: many venues may offer you a space for free since you will be driving additional traffic to their locations. You could have a dance, silent auction, battle of the bands, etc. Get items from local merchants for your silent auction/raffles. If you know a band that would play for free, see if the venue would pay the band’s booking fee as a RFL sponsorship fee.

Fundraising Tips for Individuals
  • Use the online tools to easily create fundraising emails
  • Use a link to your online fundraising page in your personal email signature
  • Create links from your online profiles to your fundraising page
  • Personally ask (on the phone, in person, via written letter) people to donate – donate forget to tell your story and why Relay is so important
  • Use personal “business cards” to give to associates, leave with your insurance agent, and other places where you do business. If you are a loyal customer, store managers/owners may give you a nice donation - either a monetary or an in-kind donation.
  • Make a special voice mail message for your cell phone or home phone that includes something about Relay: “If you are receiving this message, it’s probably because I am out fundraising for Relay For Life!"
